Useful Tips for Michigan Demolition
You can apply for a demolition permit online.
Include the application number on all documentation, which should comprise of:
- A copy of the Contractors Wrecking License (Detroit only)
- Electrical, gas, and water/sewer disconnection certifications
- Asbestos report (one of the following):
- DEQ/LARA Intent to Demolish form
- Asbestos Report from a Licensed Abatement Contractor or Emergency Order Declaring Imminent Danger
After completing your online permit, you must email [email protected] or fax the BCC Building Division (517) 241-9308.
NOTE: Check with your demolition contractor first to make sure that they won’t be handling the permitting process for you! This is often the case, but not always, so perhaps this is something you’d like to check with the contractor during the initial quoting process.
You (or your contractor) must notify MIOSHA of any demolition or asbestos removal.
In the state of Michigan, when removing or encapsulating friable asbestos-containing material, you must provide project notification specifying the intended date of removal, and you must do so 10 days prior to starting.
Generally speaking, your contractor will handle this, but always double check with them. If they ask you to submit this information, fill out this form and mail it to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) Asbestos Program or DEQ. (You cannot submit this form electronically.)
Your contractor must be licensed in the state of Michigan.
In order to perform demolition in Michigan, a contractor must have a demolition license.
For more licensure information, contact the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Professional Licensing at (517) 373-8068.
Consider renting a dumpster if you’re in charge of debris disposal.
Although demolition providers will often include the cost of debris hauling and disposal in their quote, they don’t always handle it for you. If they don’t, renting a dumpster is a great way to get rid of all the demolition debris.
