The Demolition Process

If you're having a structure demolished, like a home or a commercial structure, these are the basic aspects of the demolition process you should be familiar with.

Step 1: Have the building inspected.

Step 2: Gather the necessary permits. (Your contractor will likely handle this, so confirm this with them.)

Step 3: Disconnect existing services and utilities.

Step 4: Tear down the house using heavy machinery or deconstruction methods.

Step 5: Haul away the debris to the nearest landfill or recycling facility.

Project: Inground Pool Removal
Location: York, PA 17406
Description:
The general scope of work is the full removal of a 16’ x 36’ in-ground swimming pool and surrounding concrete walkway and perimeter chain link fencing. The pool has a vinyl liner. It has been in approximately 47 years. It is approximately 3 ½ feet deep at the lowest depth and 7 ½ feet in the “hopper” area. The capacity of the pool is about 20,500 Gallons. I would estimate the volume inside the pool to be about 2750 cubic feet (102 cubic yards). The sidewalls of the pool are 3’6” high sections of galvanized steel stampings bolted together and braced diagonally with structural angles. I believe these braces are anchored in concrete. The bottom of the pool, including the hopper area, is comprised of about 2” thick of fine aggregate stone tamped in place. The pool has two skimmers (plastic) but has no drain. All of the external and underground plumbing lines are 1 1/2” PVC. All of the filtration system components are above ground and free-standing. (These would probably not be present during teardown as I normally dismantle them during fall closing and store them inside over the winter months.) There is a concrete walkway approximately 4 foot wide around the perimeter of the pool. I would estimate the thickness of the walkway to be about 3 to 4 inches. If there is any reinforcement in this concrete I believe it is minimal, possibly fencing wire (no re-bar). I would estimate the area of the concrete decking to be about 460 square feet. There is also some additional landscaping stone (river stone) adjacent to the pool area that I would also like removed along with some stone paving blocks and a concrete slab adjacent to the pool next to the garage. I would like all components of the pool removed and discarded, including the stone comprising the bottom and the vinyl pool liner. The resulting excavation is to be back-filled with soil and finish graded. I believe that I would like the fill to be compacted but I am not sure that it would have to be what is generally known as an “engineered” backfill. There may be some additional soil replacement with grading and seeding to be considered also. Summary of tasks: 1. Acquire necessary permits 2. Remove chain link fence and all posts along with any anchoring concrete. The length of the fencing is approximately 136 feet. There are 20 fence posts. 3. Remove and discard river stone adjacent to pool deck (Note: Area covered by the river stone is approximately 210 sq. ft.) 4. Remove and discard or recycle vinyl pool liner 5. Break up and remove concrete decking, paving blocks, diving board anchorage and slab adjacent to garage. 6. Remove steel sidewalls and support angles along with any concrete anchorage; remove skimmers and any plumbing lines 7. Remove stone layer comprising the bottom and hopper area of the pool 8. Backfill excavation and rough grade, compacting as necessary (Note: Some soil utilized for the backfill will probably come from the terraced area adjacent to the pool as this was soil from the original excavation when the pool was installed. Additional soil and topsoil will probably be required.) 9. Finish grade; apply topsoil and reseed area as necessary
